SPRING DEADLINE TO IDENTIFY ALL CATTLE PRIOR TO IN-STATE MOVEMENT
The USDA has agreed to supply the Texas Animal Health Commission with the alpha-numeric, silver colored metal ear tags ("bright") at no cost to Texas dairy cattle owners to wish to use them. Producers have through March 31, 2008 to begin tagging dairy cattle with an approved identification device prior to movement.
The recipients of the USDA ear tags are to maintain a log which will include the date a tag is applied, the tag number, and the animal's breed, sex and age. The record keeping can be as simple as listing the tag number, date and the animal's description, such a a "day old Holstein buff calf", or a "two year old Jersey heifer". Tag pliers can be purchased through the veterinary clinic or at some agricultural supply stores. Once applied, the identification is to remain on the animal.
Producers are free to select from several other forms of identification: - USDA brucellosis calfhood vaccination tags (orange). -Dairy Herd Improvement Association (DHIA) tags -USDA approved electronic Animal Identification Number (AIN) tags which have the microchip, either "900" or "840" series. These can be ordered from animal supply stores.
Should there be any questions or to receive free tags, please call the Texas Animal Health Commission's local number (903) 572-1966.
